Rich Norkunas has a musical DNA steeped in the sounds of Laurel Canyon, evolving over decades into an eclectic Northwest indie music sensibility that is entirely his own.
His story has deep roots. In 1971, Rich co-wrote and recorded the folk rock song Just A Star with the band Smiles — a track that would take on a life of its own thirty years later when DJ Shadow featured it on his BBC Essential Mix in 2002, and subsequently released it on vinyl on Diminishing Returns Vol. 2 in 2003. Shadow called Just A Star "amazing" and described it as "the most asked about record that I've ever played in a mix." The song was also covered by Pink Flames in 2016 (Raft Records/The Vinyl Factory), and in 2019 Backatcha Records remastered and released a 7" vinyl of the original with a B-side cover by Astronauts Etc.
Today, Rich is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who collaborates with carefully chosen artists to bring out the emotion and energy that best connects his music to the listener. His catalog spans fun indie pop, indie rock, Americana, reflective ballads, poignant protest songs, and sometimes just something funny and unexpected. All uncomplicated but memorable, with catchy or touching melodies and believable, relatable lyrics — making it well suited for the screen, advertising, or an artist looking for something new and unique.
All music in his catalog is one-stop shop cleared, contains no AI generated composition or performance elements, and all studio musicians involved have provided signed work-for-hire agreements.
